More Information About the Area
St.
Augustine, America's oldest city, was founded in 1565 by Pedro
Menendez, 52 years after Ponce de Leon discovered La Florida.
Today St. Augustine offers something for every one: historic
and archaeological sites, living history re-enactments, museums,
wonderful Spanish architecture, specialty shops along quaint
streets, a myriad of restaurants, train, trolley or horse
drawn carriage tours, and a scenic river cruise, all in a
beautiful setting along the Matanzas River. One hundred forty-four
blocks of historic houses along narrow streets, overhung with
oaks and moss, provide hours of pleasant exploration. Just
across the Bridge of Lions and Matanzas Bay is Anastasia Island,
a barrier island with miles of beautiful beaches, shops, restaurants,
and historical and natural attractions.
