St.
Augustine, America's oldest city, was founded in 1565 by Pedro
Menendez, 52 years after Ponce de Leon discovered La Florida.
Today St. Augustine offers something for every one: historic
and archaeological sites, living history re-enactments, museums,
wonderful Spanish architecture, specialty shops along quaint
streets, a myriad of restaurants, train, trolley or horse
drawn carriage tours, and a scenic river cruise, all in a
beautiful setting along the Matanzas River. One hundred forty-four
blocks of historic houses along narrow streets, overhung with
oaks and moss, provide hours of pleasant exploration. Just
across the Bridge of Lions and Matanzas Bay is Anastasia Island,
a barrier island with miles of beautiful beaches, shops, restaurants,
and historical and natural attractions.
